It is for freedom that Christ has set us free! Our freedom is not some abstract idea, but it is this safe place within us where we know that “I am in My Father, you are in Me, and I am in you” John 14:20 You can be your true self...no masks, no pretenses, no clutter...just you.
Our precious friends, the du Toits, who lost their house and all its contents once to a fire , were faced with another fire years later. After thinking to herself, what would she take with her if she had to leave in a rush, these were Lydia's thoughts....
“What a delightful time I had walking through the rooms collecting a small pile of preciousness that I packed on my coffee table next to the car keys. So much we have, such abundance, but what struck me was the greater reality of how little we really need. I felt the tugging of the precious Holy Spirit nudging me, take with you into 2013, only what you really need and treasure. The rest, it can go. Paging through my clothes hanging in the wardrobe was easy to do in a few seconds, the clothes that didn’t fit any more or weren’t my very favourites were left behind. One pair of shoes was quite enough! I even thought that if there wasn’t room in the car I wouldn’t take all the photo albums, we're making new ones all the time anyway! A hand carved fish we bought on one of our trips into Africa; my favourite brooch Francois bought me at a street market for our 28th anniversary; Christo’s artbook and a handcarved candle holder I got in Chile. Face cream; my favourite bottle of perfume and some scarves. I knew we wouldn’t manage Stefan’s piano but we have Stefan.
No more hoarding of thought patterns, conversations and even relationships that have had their glory but all have moved on, let them go. Why? Space – that’s why – God needs space, He loves space, wide open spaces. Open pages in our diaries, open weeks in our itineraries. Let Him who fills all in all flood us with Himself, into every nook and cranny of our beings. 2013, come on, we are ready for you, all 365 days, 8765 hours, 525600 minutes!”
